Live & Kicking is a 10-hour music event, first held in 2010. The 2011 festival was headlined by seventies glam-rock legends Sweet (famous for hits such as Ballroom Blitz, Block Buster and Wig Wam Bam). The organizers have so far announced tribute bands to Bon Jovi, Coldplay and The Commitments, amongst others, to play at this summers concert. The festival is the main fundraising event for AFC Sudbury Football Club.

Having already announced US indie rockers, Wheatus (Teenage Dirtbag, A Little Respect) will be topping the bill, the full line up for this years event is detailed below with a brief band biography. D:Ream have been announced as the main support for Wheatus. Their biggest hit ‘Things can only get better’ was a number one hit back in 1993. Mark Morriss of The Bluetones and Nigel Clark of Dodgy also both return to Suffolk after headlining last year’s festival.  Wheatus front-man Brendan B. Brown said “We’re proud to be involved and can’t wait to play at LeeStock 2012.″

LeeStock was launched in memory of music mad Lee Dunford who died aged just 21 after a four year battle against cancer. Since that time the festival has grown year on year.  The festival, and its related fundraising events, have so far raised nearly £30,000.00 in Lee’s memory for the Willow Foundation, a charity aimed at improving the lives of seriously ill young adults.

Live and Kicking is an outdoor, 10-hour music extravaganza, now in its third year. Originally from Ipswich but are now based in London, with cracking tunes like Lungs (the YouTube video has had over 25,000 views alone!), it’s clear to see why these guys were snapped up.

Lemonparty

After their debut at LeeStock 2011, the Sudbury based band were certainly one of the first names on the list to be invited back, bringing you an ‘interpretive interpretation of funk, ska, rock, pop’. They certainly get your feet moving.

Sons Of Icarus

Where do you start with these guys?! maybe with the fact they have just announced a tour of Scotland, maybe with them beating hundreds of groups to win Marshall Amplifiers ‘Ultimate Band Contest’, or maybe, just maybe, mention that they played Download and Sonisphere last year…!?  Don’t miss them!

The Tom Sanderson Band

The stalwart of LeeStock. Mr Tom Sanderson is the only act to have played at every festival so far.  For many fans he will be the first name they look out for, a true LeeStock legend.

Howl Griff

They were formed in Wales but band members are from Aberystwyth, Bolton, Merseyside and Texas!! They played at ‘The Road to LeeStock’ the night before last years festival in 2011 and went down so well we asked them back for the 2012 event.

Two Steps Twice

They have played London’s infamous O2 Arena, during the ‘Live and Unsigned’ competition. Overall, placing in the top twenty acts out of an initial ten-thousand. How can you say no to that?

Sudbury Upper School Battle Of The Bands Winner – The annual competition returns on Friday May 18th. The best young local talent will earn the right to open LeeStock Music Festival 2012!

I received a phone call on Saturday afternoon that pretty much saved our day. It was from my dad’s friend who has run 4 marathons. He gave me lots of last minute advice but the one that I think made the most difference was when he asked me if I had got lots of ‘Jelly Babies’ to which I said “no why is that”. After he told me why I told the people helping us to make sure we had loads of Jelly Babies and I think if it wasn’t for the extra sugar and calories then I wouldn’t have been able to make it to the end. I went to bed at 9 o’clock that night but I don’t think I got to sleep until at least 1 in the morning.

On the morning of the run I got up at 7 and had some porridge with a banana and then went to put up the finish line and banners around town, thinking that I had loads of time but before I knew it was 10 to 11 and we were on the way up the gym to get warmed up. After spending most of the week worrying more about the preparations, who is going to be on the water tables, who is going to run with us and every thing else, It wasn’t until about 11:45 that I realized what we were about to do and by then it was too late to worry about it.

I was lucky that I had 2 of my good friends cycling with me the whole way. James Janzen ran with Johnny for the first lap and Toby Goodwin joined in to run with him later on. The start of the run went really well and before I knew it I was already at the other end of Long Melford 6 miles in to the course where my friend Lee Barber, who had been training with me, joined the run and as we headed back to Sudbury. My friend’s step-dad joined me as well, but as I came down North Street for the first time my friends didn’t realize I was coming, and unfortunately missed us. So I ended up running a complete lap of the course without seeing anyone, which really got me down.

As I reached about the 12th mile I started to really feel my legs going and thought that it was the start of a hard slog, but as I reached the next water stop there was a large crowd of people, which really cheered me up and pretty soon I had forgotten about my legs and settled into a pace. As I started the last lap another 2 people joined me one of them being my good friend Chelle Allen, and the other one was my dad’s friend who had given me the ‘Jelly Baby’ advice the day before.

The last lap went really quickly and although I was going at a slow pace for the first half, when I passed my fiancée at the water stop near the Bull Hotel she said she nearly cried and wanted to stop me as I looked really weird and drawn out. I soon started to pick up the pace and the closer the end come the quicker I was getting until I got to North Street, where I went into a full sprint and was across the finish line.

A walk around the church helped compose my self as I was very emotional and had to stop myself crying a few times on the home stretch, then I came back to the crowd and gave everyone sweaty hugs. I managed to run the whole way without stopping or walking and I did it in 5 hours 20 minutes which I was very happy with, Jon managed to run the whole first lap which was a great achievement as his ankle hasn’t been great since Christmas, and then he completed the next 2 laps walking and running finishing the course in 6 hours 30 minutes.

It was really great having a nice cold beer that night followed by a day of fried breakfast, cakes and ice cream. I am definitely going to keep up the running and try and stay in shape.

To sum it up for me during the last 8 months:

• 2 injuries that nearly stopped me
• 2 stone in weight lost somewhere on the way
• 2 pairs of running shoes
• 2 tubs of protein shake
• 64 hours of running
• 350 miles ran
• 2 packets of life saving Jelly Babies
• And £3,800 raised so far

For me, that’s worth every minute.

From the anonymous donor who gives each year, to the volunteers that always offer their support with no expectation of anything in return.  There are the loyal Stockers and Stockettes who turn up to all of our silly events and are willing to give generously each time and there are the bands who give us their time and put on great performances for free. The amazing people, doing amazing challenges to raise money for LeeStock and therefore for The Willow Foundation.

There’s the local businesses and pubs who support us either financially, or with use of their facilities and most importantly the Willow Foundation, who always help us feel like we’re doing something worthwhile.  There’s also of course Rob, Rose, James, Matt, Ash and Johnny.

Pentlow based Nethergate Brewery has producing a ‘LeeStock Beer’ which will go on sale for the first time at the Sudbury Rugby Club Beer Festival.

Nethergate Brewery, named in the Good Pub Guide Brewery of the Year 2012, was founded in Clare in 1986 and recently moved to Pentlow for extra space and capacity.

It is to no-ones surprise that we have arrived at the perfect combination of charity giving and alcohol – the LeeStock Ale.

In an exciting link up with local brewers Nethergate, we are going to be selling a specially branded LeeStock Ale.  With hints of awesomeness and undertones of charity, we are sure that this beer will please even the most refined palettes.  We are hoping to launch the beer at the Sudbury Rugby Club Beer Festival, where we will also be offering discounted tickets, 2 for £35, so please come along and grab yourself two bargains – a beer and some tickets!

We have also confirmed that the beer will be on sale at the White Horse in Sudbury for consumption on the premises or to takeaway and at the Sudbury Snooker Club.  We are also hoping to announce more outlets for the LeeStock beer shortly, so please keep checking here, on our Facebook page and on our twitter feed.

On 6th May, at 12 p.m. Ash Watts and John Hamblin, both 27, will be running a full 26.2 mile marathon course through Sudbury and some surrounding villages with donations and sponsorship going to The Willow Foundation, via the popular LeeStock event.

LeeStock is now in it’s fifth year and raises money for The Willow Foundation in memory of Sudbury lad Lee Dunford, who died in 2006 after a brave fight against Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Both Ash and John have been big supporters of the LeeStock festival and the associated events over the last few years.

Ash has already raised over £2,000.00 during this time, firstly through tattooing himself with Jedward (their grinning faces forever on his bottom!) and last year eating a selection of live insects on stage at the festival!

This will be by far the biggest challenge yet as neither Ash nor John are ‘regular athletes’ and this will be the first such event either has ever attempted.  They have both been training since before Christmas, running and cycling primarily, and have enjoyed support from local business Mwah, Sudbury Pysiotherapy Centre and Art Plastering.
